WesternOne’s proudly wishes Sean Geall all the best at Canadian Curling Championships
WesternOne’s very own Sean Geall will be competing at the Brier this weekend among World and Canadian champions for a chance to represent Canada at the 2010 Games, and a spot at the World Championships. Geall has already won the B.C.‘s Men’s Provincial Championships last month beating out Jay Peachey. From March 7th -15th at the Pengrowth Saddledome in Calgary, Alberta, Gaell will compete with six skips who have won one or more Briers, four of whom who have also won at least one world title, and the 2006 Olympic gold medalists. Good luck Sean!
The Maple Ridge News, FEBRUARY 19, 2009

Geall gets his purple-heart with victory in the provincial final
He needed an extra end to do it, but Sean Geall ended Jay Peachey’s six-game win streak with an 8-7 victory to claim his first B.C. men’s curling championship. The see-saw battle between the two Royal City Curling Club rinks featured five lead changes as both teams aggressively tried to get the upper hand in front of the boisterous crowd at the Golden Ears Winter Club on Sunday. Geall’s team of Brent Pierce at third, Mark Olson at lead, and Maple Ridge’s Kevin Recksiedler at second will represent B.C. at the Brier in Calgary next month.
It was familiar territory for Reckseidler, who grew up curling at the local club and was a member of its junior curling program. “My parents both curled at the club so it was great to see all the same people,” he said. But it wasn’t just the crowd that was familiar – so was the competition. Reckseidler curled with Peachey’s rink for five years, winning the provincial tournament in 2004 with him, while throwing third for Peachey’s rink was fellow Maple Ridge native Grant Dezura. “I’ve known them for years, so I was really comfortable out there,” said Reckseidler.
Peachey’s rink had won six in a row to get to the final, but seemed to run out of gas in the latter ends. After a disappointing 2-4 start to the tourney, Robbie Gallaugher at lead, Kevin Mackenzie at second, Peachey and Dezura were outstanding in the latter half of the week, winning their remaining three draws and a tie-breaker against Jeff Richard’s rink from Kelowna to make the play-offs.
With the win, Reckseidler is off to Calgary for the 2009 Brier, which begins March 7.
Reckseidler, then playing with Peachey’s rink, finished third at the national championships in 2004 and hopes to improve on that result this time around. “It’s pretty much the Super Bowl of curling, and this year’s field could be the strongest yet,” he said. “But I have that experience to draw on, and that’s going to help.” Reckseidler isn’t the only one on his team to have experience at the tournament – Pierce won the Brier as part of Greg McAulay’s rink in 2000. “Brent knows what it takes to win,” said Reckseidler. “It’s not going to be like a deer in the headlights for us.”

The increases are largely based on acquisitions that have increased the size of WesternOne’s business.
Revenue for the third quarter was CD $8.8 million (about U.S. $7.2 million), compared with $6.6 million for the same period last year. Revenue for the first eight months was $24.1 million, compared with $16.4 million for the year-ago period.

Business BC TOP 100
B.C’s STRONGEST & FASTEST-GROWING PUBLICLY TRADED COMPANIES
The Fastest 50 British Columbia’s fastest-growing publicly traded companies
These lists detail two pillars of B.C.’s economy:
Those companies with the fastest growth and those companies with the strongest fundamentals, hence the Fastest 50 and the Strongest 50 combine to form The Vancouver Sun’s Top 100.
The Fastest list is all about balanced growth, not just success in one category of financial performance.
Where other ranking efforts look solely at revenue change, BusinessBC’s sophisticated analysis is based on formulas developed by James Brander of the Sauder School of Business at the University of British Columbia. It takes into account employee growth, revenues, stock performance, and earnings.
The Strongest 50 concentrates on total assets, market capitalization and how the company performs based on those fundamentals (more below.) Nineteen companies, such as Quadra Mining, have both strong fundamentals and continue to grow, so they qualify for both lists.
BusinessBC’s other project partner, Ernst & Young LLP, began by looking at all publicly traded companies with headquarters in B.C. or a significant proportion of business activities located in the province. Shares of most but not all of the companies trade on the Toronto Stock Exchange or the TSX Venture Exchange. Detailed financial information was drawn from annual reports and other sources. Employee numbers were compiled by staff at The Vancouver Sun.
More than 1,000 corporations were reviewed to arrive at this selection. James Brander’s formula was applied to Ernst & Young’s findings and the result was further refined to ensure that companies with balanced growth across the categories received due recognition.

WESTERNONE RE-BRANDS ITS B.C. RENTAL HOLDINGS
After recently acquiring three well-established B.C.-based business units, WesternOne Equity Income Fund has launched a new brand and visual identity, WesternOne Rentals and Sales. This initiative will combine the strengths of Production Equipment, Old Country Rentals and C & N Rentals under one banner, creating a streamlined presence in the province’s equipment rental marketplace.
According to CEO Darren Latoski, this initiative is a direct response to the needs of the company’s top customers who operate out of several locations across B.C. He says reorganizing WesternOne’s internal operations and unifying the three businesses will benefit its customers, providing increased access to the company’s equipment fleet across five B.C. retail locations, equipment sales, repair and service departments as well as industry expertise in several equipment rental segments.
Based in Vancouver, WesternOne seeks to acquire predominantly equipment and infrastructure-related businesses primarily located in British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan to generate stable and growing distributions to its unit holders as well as achieve overall capital appreciation.
Steve Taylor, president of sales and marketing, says WesternOne’s goal is to become the largest Western-based company in the equipment rental business. With 25 years’ experience in the local industry, he adds this growth will serve to enhance the customer service experience, which will continue to be provided 24-7 by the same seasoned staff.
In the last two years, WesternOne acquired Production Equipment, a specialist aerial and material handling equipment rental company located in the Lower Mainland, Old Country Rentals, a successful equipment rentals business with two locations in Victoria and C & N Rentals, a leading player in the Victoria and Southern Vancouver Island equipment rental industry for more than 30 years with two locations in the province’s capital, and C & N Rentals, a successful business with branches in Comox and Courtney and a growing presence in the Central and Northern Vancouver Island equipment rental industry.
